Located on the western edge of Wathena, Kansas, Christ Lutheran Church is a congregation of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, gathered around Jesus Christ and His gifts of grace. We believe that the Church is not primarily a place where we come to do something for God, but where God comes to serve His people. Here Christ speaks His forgiving Word, washes sinners in Holy Baptism, feeds His people with His true Body and Blood in the Lord’s Supper, and strengthens us through the proclamation of His Gospel.
We are unapologetically and joyfully Lutheran. We believe the Holy Scriptures are the inspired and infallible Word of God, and we confess the Christian faith as it is faithfully expressed in the Lutheran Confessions. At the heart of everything we believe and teach is Jesus Christ—crucified for sinners and risen from the dead for our justification. Salvation is God’s gift from beginning to end: by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
Our worship reflects that confession. Each week we gather for the historic Divine Service, joining Christians across generations in hearing God’s Word, confessing our sins, receiving Christ’s forgiveness, singing the great hymns of the faith, praying together, and receiving the Sacrament of the Altar. Our worship is reverent and liturgical because we believe something extraordinary is happening here: Christ Himself is present among His people to give His gifts. And there is a place here for you.
Whether you have been Lutheran your entire life, are exploring Christianity for the first time, have been away from church for years, or simply find yourself wondering whether it might be time to come home, you are welcome at Christ Lutheran Church. Nestled among the rolling hills of Doniphan County and just minutes from St. Joseph, Missouri, Christ Lutheran is a small-town congregation with a great treasure to share: Jesus Christ and Him crucified for the forgiveness of sins.

WHO WE SERVE
Doniphan County Community
The towns and rural families of Doniphan County including Wathena, Troy, Highland, and Elwood. We are the only LCMS congregation in the county and welcome all who seek historic Lutheran worship and sound biblical teaching.
Neighbors Across the MISSOURI River
We also serve believers and seekers from the greater St. Joseph, Missouri area, complementing the ministries of our sister LCMS congregations in that city. Our doors are open to anyone looking for reverent worship and a Christ-centered community.
Visiting Air National Guard Aircrews
Located near the Rosecrans Air National Guard Base in St. Joseph, aircrew and service members from around the world are always welcome. No matter how long your stay in the area our congregation offers a spiritual home grounded in grace, faith, and Scripture.

Welcome to Christ Lutheran Church in Wathena, Kansas! I’m Pastor Cody, and I’m delighted that you’ve taken a few moments to learn more about our congregation.
If you are looking for a church home, returning to the Church after some time away, new to the Lutheran faith, or simply searching for answers about God and life, I want you to know that you are welcome here. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you walk through our doors. Come as you are, with your questions, your burdens, your joys, and even your doubts. We would be honored to have you worship with us.
Christ Lutheran is a congregation of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, and we joyfully confess Jesus Christ crucified and risen for the forgiveness of sins. We believe the Holy Scriptures are God’s inspired and trustworthy Word and that sinners are saved entirely by God’s grace, through faith in Jesus Christ—not because of what we have done for God, but because of what Christ has done for us.
When we gather for the Divine Service, we come primarily to receive. Christ serves His people through His Word and Sacraments. Here, sinners hear that they are forgiven. The Baptized are reminded that they belong to Christ. And at His altar, our Lord gives His true Body and Blood for the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of faith.
That is what I want Christ Lutheran to be: a place where weary sinners are pointed continually to Jesus.

The Portable Pantry is a weatherproof, waterproof, lightweight, durable split unit that can be set up virtually anywhere! With a mini food pantry on one side and a mini library/book exchange on the other, our Portable Pantry provides nourishment for the body and mind!
